IHE Delft Institute for Water Education invites applications for the Sudan Fellowships for professionals in the Netherlands in 2023.
The Sudan Scholarships are offered in the framework of the project: “Supporting water management in Sudan through capacity strengthening and applied research”, aiming to strengthen the capacity of professionals and decision-makers in the Sudanese water sector to improve future water management.
Scholarships will be connected to the previously identified research topics and tailor-made training. These topics are about 1) rainfall runoff-modelling of parts of the Blue Nile catchment area; 2) water harvesting (modelling, monitoring, implementing) in the Darfur states; 3) biophysical and social elements of water productivity in the Gezira Scheme; 4) social and/or environmental impact analysis of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
IHE Delft will provide water professionals from Sudan with MSc level education in Delft. About 5 scholarships will be awarded to applicants with admission to the MSc programme in Water and Sustainable Development, starting end of October 2022.
Selected candidates are expected to partake in a number of scoping and training activities in Sudan in August and September 2022 before they start their MSc study at IHE Delft; and in December 2023 after they have finished their MSc study. These activities might involve collecting data or contacting stakeholders relevant to students’ thesis topics before, and contributing to tailormade training on these topics after their MSc. For these activities, candidates will also receive an allowance.
During the study programme in Delft, the students will participate in extracurricular workshops to discuss/learn specific water scarcity challenges, strengthen relations amongst water professionals, and stimulate the building of a Community of Practice. The MSc thesis research topics of the Sudan scholarship students should address water-related issues relevant to the student’s home country.
In this particular program, these are issues connected to the topics above and approached from technical and/or social angles. For the scoping and training activities, students will be supported by IHE staff, partner universities in Sudan and external training and capacity-building experts.

MSc Fellowships will be provided to participants from ODA SIDS countries and cover the cost of tuition fees, accommodation, insurance and travel.
