DBSA Youth Challenge in South Africa 2021 (Win up to R 1.5 million)

The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) invites applications for the DBSA Youth Challenge in South Africa in 2021.

DBSA is a leading development finance institution (DFI) operating across the African continent. It provides infrastructure financing in the energy, transport, water, and Information Communications and Technology (ICT) sectors. It has a secondary focus on the education, health, and human settlements sectors. It believes that financing infrastructure is about improving people’s lives and growing the economy.

The inaugural DBSA Youth Challenge invites youth to submit innovative ideas and solutions that address the challenges faced in infrastructure and can improve the lives of our communities in new and innovative ways that build Africa’s prosperity. They should address issues within the transport, water, energy, Information Communications and Technology (ICT), education, health, and human settlements sectors.

In the following sectors, your ideas should

  • Energy: contribute to economic and environmentally sustainable energy generation, storage, and/or distribution.
  • Health: improve access to quality affordable primary healthcare in marginalized communities in urban and rural areas of the country.
  • Water: reduce water pollution and/or increase access to clean potable water.
  • Human Settlements & Housing: offer a solution to the need for affordable, environmentally sustainable housing in informal settlements and/or rural areas of the country.
  • Transport: improve access, safety, and/or the experience of public commuters, or reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, or increase the efficiency of moving goods.
  • ICT: solve the challenge of access faced by many, breaking down those barriers to digital accessibility and connectivity.
  • Education:  solve the need for access to quality education for every child ensuring that they’re equipped for the future.

Worth of Award

Winners of the challenge can win up to R1.5 million.


In order to be eligible for the challenge, candidates must be

  • youth legally residing in South Africa
  • between the ages of 18 and 35

Ideas will be selected according to:

  • Originality
  • Relevance
  • Technical feasibility
  • Quality of the submission, motivation, and presentation
  • Scalability
