The holidays are around the corner and with it comes a lot of merriment; eating, drinking, fun events, etc. There is always a whole lot of food to eat this season and it is common to overindulge. If you desire to eat healthy regardless, then here are some tips for international students to avoid binge eating.
1. Stay Hydrated
It is important to drink enough water on a regular basis to stay healthy. Water helps to maintain the balance of fluids in the body and can also help control calories. Taking fruits and vegetables which are high in water content makes you feel fuller for longer. This way, you can eat healthy though in smaller portions.
2. Don’t go to Events Hungry
As aforementioned, the holidays are characterized by lots of events where you can eat, drink and have loads of fun. So, if you’re going for a party of other social events, don’t go hungry. Have something sumptuous and nourishing before you leave so that when you get there, you won’t be tempted to binge.
3. Use a Small Plate
When eating especially at a buffet, use a small plate; a salad plate will do the trick. You can easily fill the plate with more vegetables, fruits, fibre and proteins. These are healthier food choices because they are low in calories, help to maintain body weight and increase your metabolism. This is one sure way international students can avoid binge eating.
4. Avoid Processed Foods
Most processed foods are rich in excess sugar and unhealthy fat which can easily make you gain unnecessary/unwanted weight. It is, therefore, advisable to choose whole foods and prepare meals yourself. This way, you can keep track of your weight and calorie intake while eating healthy.
5. Make simple yet Healthy Swaps
International students can avoid binge eating by making simple yet healthy swaps for appetizers, desserts and even when snacking. For instance, you can have roasted sweet potatoes instead of sweet potato casserole or tea instead of hot chocolate. You can also try apple crumble instead of apple pie or a smoothie instead of ice cream. Making these simple swaps can help you maintain a healthy weight or even lose weight during the holidays.
