The University of Copenhagen in Denmark is inviting applications for the PhD fellow in Agriculture and Climate Change – Nitrous Oxide Emissions from fertilizers in 2019.
Project description
The work of the PhD fellow will be closely connected to the two projects “National emission factors from fertilizer in different crop rotations” (NATEF) funded by the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food and the EU H2020 funded “Transition towards a more carbon and nutrient efficient agriculture in Europe” (Nutri2Cycle). The NATEF project aims to determine emission factors for nitrous oxide from different mineral and organic fertilizers used in a range of Danish cropping systems.
The PhD project will investigate nitrous oxide emissions and how they are affected by fertilizer application, use of nitrification inhibitors and the interaction with climate and crops.
Worth of Award
- The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 322,642 (approx. €43,015) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 44,567).
- Negotiation for a salary supplement is possible.
- Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
Eligibility
Applicants should:
- Hold an MSc degree in a relevant discipline such as agricultural or environmental engineering, agronomy, biology, environmental science.
- Have a good understanding of the mechanisms that determine the turnover, transport, and losses of nitrogen and carbon in the soil-plant-atmosphere of farming systems. Specific knowledge about soil processes leading to nitrous oxide formation in soils will be an advantage.
- have good technical skills and interest in running complicated equipment for conducting environmental measurements in field experiments as well as in controlled environments. Prior experience with gas flux measurements will be an advantage.
- Have experience with data management and have an interest in statistics.
- Have good communicative and interpersonal skills.
- Have excellent English writing and speaking abilities.
