The PhD program also known as a Doctor of Philosophy spans for at least 3 years. It could span for a longer period depending on the country of study, university, the discipline, among other things. Regardless of the duration, it is a period of intense research and writing. Plus, there are factors that can affect the duration of PhD programs for foreign students.
There’s no gainsaying that doctorate studies are quite expensive. A lot of time, intellectual and financial resources are equally required to complete the program successfully. Thus the need to ensure that the duration of your study is not extended. What then are the factors that can affect the duration of the program?
1. Courses
One of the major determinants of the duration of the program is the course of study. In some cases, candidates take advanced courses within the second to third years of their PhD. The duration for the completion of course credits also depends on the schedule or semesters of the university. Similarly, part-time studies take longer time.
2. Examination
Ph.D students undergo various tests and exams before they complete their studies. These can serve as a setback to the exact timing for the completion of the study. This is because students take basic exams in their first year of study to assess their knowledge of the chosen field of study.
They equally take a general exam to test their knowledge of the PhD discipline. In the event that a student fails, s/he may have to reseat the exam thus having to spend a semester beyond the already designated semesters for learning.
3. Dissertation
A dissertation is an essential prerequisite for the completion of a PhD because it indicates adequate knowledge and professionalism in the discipline. It can also affect the duration of PhD programs for foreign students because it depends on how long the student is able to complete his/her dissertation.
Bagging a PhD is not a piece of cake however, it is one of the most exciting and fulfilling experiences when completed successfully.
