Green Matter Fellowship for South Africans is now open for the 2013-2014 academic session. The Green Matter Fellowship is designed to connect a community of outstanding Biodiversity champions and leaders, to support their professional development and positively profile their work and the Biodiversity sector. It affords participants the opportunity to fully engage in their study and career paths, alongside peer who share in their commitment.
The theme for the Fellowship in 2013-2014 is Biodiversity and Responses to Climate Change, and the associated issues and risks around:
- Biodiversity and Water Security
- Biodiversity and Food Security, and
- Biodiversity and Social Change/Innovation
Worth of Award
Postgraduate Bursaries: with a value of up to 50% of average costs, per academic year. Average costs are calculated in view of living expenses, study fees, research equipment, research costs and travel opportunities. In addition GreenMatter will provide mentorship, careers guidance and a platform for engaging in learning networks.
Professional Development Awards: with a cash value of up to R30,000 towards a specific professional development opportunity and supported by exposure to cross-sectoral dialogues, networked mentoring opportunities and access to other leading thinkers and practitioners.
Eligibility
Postgraduate Bursaries: To apply under this programme you must be:
- A citizen of South Africa
- Normally resident in South Africa
- In possession of a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
- Seeking funding for a full or part-time Masters or doctoral programme at a South African higher education institute
- Pursuing a field of study aligned to GreenMatter’s priority areas

Professional Development Awards: To apply under this programme you must be:
- A citizen of South Africa
- Normally resident in South Africa
- Currently employed in a role aligned to GreenMatter’s priority areas

All applicants will be expected to demonstrate their commitment to the sector and to articulate the relevance of their field of study or work to the theme.
GreenMatter has a strong transformation agenda and encourages applications from black South African candidates.

- Bursary applicants must apply to their chosen universities separately and awards are conditional on the applicant being offered a place at the relevant university.
