Students should be aware of their environment and know how to make a difference by keeping it healthy rather than causing havoc to it. There are several simple ways that international students can help save the environment from all sorts of contamination thus making it healthy for humans, animals and plants.
Helping to save the environment can be as simple as picking up pieces of garbage dropped in the wrong places. Littering your surrounding with empty water bottles or other forms of garbage which can easily be blown into the aquatic or terrestrial habitat is harmful. Here are some healthy tips international students can use to help save the environment.
1. Use reusable Bags
Use reusable bags that can easily be washed to avoid disposing of such refuse in the environment. Going shopping with your own reusable bag is very important because it saves you from spending a lot of money. Plastic grocery-type bags often get thrown in and block drainage canals which pollute the environment, water bodies and cause flooding. The effects of such activities affect human health adversely and can cause diseases like diarrhoea, malaria etc. These are some of the leading causes of death in Africa today.
2. Print as little as Necessary
Using a lot of paper is risky for the environment so endeavour to have your notes in soft copy instead. In this digital era, documents can be saved and easily accessed on the cloud using electronic devices. Save money, print documents only when absolutely necessary.
Using recycling cans is also one of the best options to help maintain a healthy environment. When you find recycling cans near your dorm or on campus, help to dispose of them in the right places. This is a very simple way to help save the environment.
4. Use reusable Beverage Containers
Reusable containers can be used for some time before needing to be replaced. Using reusable water bottles not only helps the environment, but it also saves you money. Fortunately, you can use reusable containers to preserve food freshness for longer while decreasing the amount of discarded plastic and saving the environment.
5. Pass on your Notes
Owing to the fact that there are people who will come after you, it’s advisable to pass on your notes and old textbooks. This is better than throwing them away after graduation. Recycle papers that are not important and sell items that will be of benefit to other people coming after you.
6. Walk or Cycle
Driving automobiles is one of the biggest causes of pollution in the world today. The health benefits of walking or cycling are enormous, they are also highly beneficial to the environment. So, take the liberty walk or use your bicycle if the journey is a short one.
7. Save Electricity
Use energy-efficient light bulbs instead of regular bulbs. They last longer and will save you a bit of money too. It is also necessary to ensure that you turn off lights and other electronic appliances when they are not in use.
8. Save Water
Limit your water usage while washing dishes or clothes. Sometimes, people waste water by leaving the tap running when not in use, this should be avoided. If you observe a tap left running in the convenience or someplace else on campus, be a good student by turning it off.
Saving the environment is everybody’s business and there are many simple steps that can be taken to achieve this. When the environment is protected from pollution and other forms of damage, everyone benefits. When the reverse happens, everyone is at risk so do the bit you can and encourage other students to do same.
