Academic probation is a position created by higher educational institutions. It is used to indicate that a student is not making the standard academic progress required for graduation. Academic probation could result in a student’s suspension or expulsion which in turn, has several effects on students.
Students on academic probation may lose the opportunity to pursue their major of choice if they don’t meet the minimum GPA. This can also happen if they’ve failed too many of the major’s course requirements. Here are some of the effects of academic probation on students.
1. Loss of financial Aid
Most international students depend heavily on scholarships for their studies. So one of the major effects of academic probation on students is the reduction in financial aid. They even stand a chance of losing the scholarship completely under the circumstances.
2. Fear of dismissal from the University
A student can easily develop fear and anxiety when placed on probation. Probation letters can also create fear and low self-esteem. It makes students feel discouraged because of their inability to make progress in their studies. This can be demoralizing and make them lack confidence when associating with fellow students.
3. Psychological Effect
Placing students on probation can have a psychological effect which may result in mental inbalance if they are not counseled properly. A school drop-out can easily indulge in some negative social vices which are capable of tarnishing their reputation. They include vices such as drug addiction, excessive consumption of alcohol, cultism, etc.
Research has revealed that placing students on probation increases the likelihood that a student will choose to drop out especially males. It, therefore, behooves on international students to do the best they can to maintain good grades. This will keep them a safe distance away from probation.
