Recent PhD Holders who seek to participate in conducting current research at sites affiliated with the Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the US National Institutes of Health can now apply for the 2014-2015 Postdoctoral Research Grants in Public Health.
For 2014-2015, sites in eight countries – Bangladesh, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Peru, South Africa and Zimbabwe – will host post-doctoral research scholars. Below are the codes for each site. Applicants are to visit their website for more details on each grant.

Worth of Awards

  • Fulbright grants will fund nine months of research in each of these countries, except Peru, where Fulbright grants will fund four months and FIC will seek to arrange funding for the remaining five months.

Below are eligibility criteria for applicants, depending on the field of research and site of studentship. Applicants are to obtain full details for the eligibility criteria from the link provided below. Please note that possession of all the requirements is not needed, as each project has its own requirement.

  • Scholars who received their Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree within the past five years are eligible to apply.
  • Recent post-doctoral scholars in biomedical areas, especially virology/immunology; MD or DVM levels who are interested in doing lab work projects in molecular epidemiology related to prevention, treatment, transmission and drug resistance for HIV/AIDS.
  • Recent post-doctoral scholars with Ph.D., M.D., dental school or veterinary school doctoral degree.
  • Recent post-doctoral scholars who hold a Ph.D., MD, DDS or comparable degree.
  • Recent post-doctoral scholars who hold a Ph.D., M.D., Sc.D. or equivalent and have previous wet-lab experience in microbiology, immunology and molecular biology as well as working knowledge of epidemiology, infectious diseases, biostatistics and data management.
  • Recent post-doctoral physicians or biomedical scientists
  • Recent post-doctoral scholars who hold an MD or Ph.D.
  • Recent post-doctoral scholars who are in medicine, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, pathology, or family medicine.
  • Recent post-doctoral scholars who are in a medical or public health discipline or medical residents.
  • Recent post-doctoral scholars with some prior experience or training in injury control prevention or care who hold a Ph.D., M.D., DO, doctoral level nursing degree or other doctoral degree in any field relevant to the topic, including epidemiology, occupational and environmental health, public health, behavioral science, economics, implementation science, and potentially others.

How to Apply

  • Applicants correspond with the host site and its U.S. partner contacts about their experience and how they could participate with ongoing research projects at the sites.
  • A letter of invitation from the host site is required to be submitted with the application.
  • Each site is a registered organization in the host country and has a U.S. university as a partner.
  • U.S. scholars from any institution can apply.
  • The (FIC) will provide support to research sites and a five-day orientation at NIH, planned for the first week in July, 2014. Fulbright scholar allowances for the country/program will be paid to the grantee. Award numbers, contact information and research areas of interest follow:
