Soft skills are personal attributes that enable students to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people. We’re not ruling out the importance of getting good grades but know that soft skills are an essential part of employment in today’s world. So let’s explore the benefits of soft skills to international students, shall we?
- Leadership
While in school, many different opportunities will present themselves for you to motivate yourself and others. You will encounter opportunities to lead, supervise, mentor and monitor others. You’ll need to manage their emotions and opinions proactively without losing sight of your goals and the big picture.
2. Teamwork
Sometimes, students prefer to work on their own but, teamwork is more fun and beneficial. This is because the strengths of each member of the team can be harnessed for the benefit of all. Responsibilities can easily be delegated thus making tasks easier to accomplish with each team member being accountable to the others. Remember that two good heads are better than one so teams enjoy a greater pool of ideas.
3. Communication Skills
Employers are interested in students with good active listening, speaking and writing skills. They seek candidates who can convey their ideas and opinions in a professional manner to superiors and colleagues alike. This skill is also important when working in a team as one must understand that no idea or opinion is superior or inferior to another. International students with such soft skills are more adept and academic savvy.
4. Conflict Resolution
The workplace brings people from different backgrounds, with different orientations and from different works of life together. You find this in the school environment as well and as a result of these diversities, conflicts may arise. How you’re able to resolve these conflicts is evidence of your leadership skills.
5. Problem-Solving
This involves your ability to analyse problems by collecting and interpreting relevant information. It’s also the ability to proffer workable solutions to solve problems or suggest steps that can be taken in that regard. To do this successfully, you need to be creative, think abstractly and be able to draw from experiences to solve problems.
6. Professionalism
This is clearly demonstrated in the quality of relationships you have with customers, colleagues and managers. Professionalism also entails a willingness to accept and follow instructions as provided by your superiors. Furthermore, it is your ability to ensure that personal preferences do not interfere with or affect professional requirements.
7. Flexibility and Adaptability
Things don’t always go according to plan or expectation so it’s all too important to be flexible and able to adapt to change. Sometimes new responsibilities may be handed over to you; employers want students who can adapt quickly, handle it with a sense of urgency and still deliever on target.
8. Social and Emotional Intelligence
Bearing in mind that we are social beings who react differently to issues helps us to be more accommodating of others. This is key when working in teams because no two people are the same and will therefore feel and react to things their own way. Being able to relate to people harmoniously and manage their emotions effectively is very important. This is one of the major soft skills international students need.
9. Time management
Punctuality and time consciousness are important traits students need to imbibe. It shows effectiveness as well as an ability to work under pressure which is key to employers. It also shows that you are able to handle tasks as expected with little or no supervision and can respect the ethical standards of the organization.
