1. Learn to Cook
Many a time cooking feels like a chore but it can actually be a lot of fun. From shopping for groceries to actual preparation, you stand the chance of preparing healthy sumptuous meals for yourself. To make it even more exciting, you can invite your friends over from time to time. When eating out, endeavour to eat healthily with high portions of protein, fibre, veggies and low carbs.
2. Do not skip Breakfast
Begin your day with a healthy and hearty breakfast. This will start you off on a good note and help you do your best academically all through the semester. It is equally advisable that you minimize your consumption of junks as they are not very healthy.
3. Stay Hydrated
Water is life so keep your system well lubricated by drinking a lot of water. You can use reusable bottles, they are cheaper and will help you save money. Plus, your kidneys and other organs will thank you for it. Don’t forget to moisturize your skin with moisturizers.
As an international student, having adequate sleep is key to your health and success. So avoid taking caffeinated drinks or eating before bed as it could affect your sleep. When doing an assignment or preparing for a test or exam, study ahead so you don’t have to stay up all night. Having inadequate sleep will make you tired and affect your performance.
5. Make Friends
One of the major advantages of studying abroad and in higher institutions is the fact that you get to meet people from all different walks of life. Establishing healthy relationships is a step in the right direction as some of them could become your friends for life. They will also become your support system while in school.
6. Learn to manage Stress
Each student has a way of managing stress, stick with what works for you. Doing some exercise, taking short naps, catching up with friends, watching movies, attending social events, etc are some ways to manage stress. Where stress levels become intense, feel free to speak to an academic advisor, counsellor or anyone who can help you manage it.
Most universities have gyms which you can join. There are also sports clubs on campus which are fun ways to exercise and connect with people. Trying out new sports would be exciting, fun and challenging all in one mix but it’s worth the shot.
8. Have Fun
The popular saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” isn’t just a cliche, it’s a fact. So after working hard in your academic pursuits, take some time out to relax and have fun. Hanging out with friends and binge drinking is a common practice among students but moderation is key. You don’t want to end up with a hangover, extra calories from alcohol or a hole in your pocket owing to overindulgence.
