Being a standardized exam, the best way to get great TOEFL test scores without much stress is to prepare ahead of time. Preparing 6 months ahead of your exam at least is a step in the right direction. Practising past questions and reading online resources can help international students answer TOEFL test questions correctly.
What else do you need to do? Let’s find out.
1. Practice Well
You can access various resources online to learn how to answer questions correctly. Remember that your focus is on listening, speaking, reading and writing. All the patterns of the TOEFL test are made available on the internet to help you prepare adequately.
2. Time Management
Time management is the most important aspect of preparing for a TOEFL test. One very good way to manage your time is by reading online resources, magazines, international TV channels and radio channels. They are rich resources to learn necessary skills for TOEFL questions within a short period of time. Pace yourself while practising questions on each section to boost your confidence and increase your chances of success.
3. Study Hard
This is a standardized test which is both recognized and accepted around the world so it’s important to study hard. Study relevant resources that will broaden your knowledge base. Rather than cramming, seek to understand English as the natives do. This will be highly instrumental in helping you communicate effectively while studying.
4. Get familiar with the Exam Format
Note that the Internet-Based Test (iBT) is in four sections;
Reading section: This lasts for about 60 to 80 minutes.
Listening section: which lasts for about 60 to 90 minutes.
Speaking section: which lasts for about 20 minutes.
Writing section: with a time span of about 50 minutes. There’s a 10-minute break in-between the different sections.
There are lots of online practice tests (free and paid preparation materials and videos) that will give you a clue about how the TOEFL test is done. Moreover, you can contact your local TOEFL iBT Resource Center for general in-language information about the TOEFL test and preparation.
The online resources provided by ETS for international students taking the TOEFL test include:
