The Royal Family is a well-known symbol of leadership in the UK. It comprises Queen Elizabeth II and her close relations. There is no strict legal or formal definition of who is or is not a member of the British royal family. Traditionally, royals never had a university education. However, times have changed. A good number of British Royals are now heading towards attaining a university degree while those who have attained the degree are doing well to encourage the young ones. The history of the British Royal Family will be succinctly considered as well as their pursuit of academic excellence.

Charles Philip Arthur George (The Prince of Wales)

He was born 14 November 1948 at Buckingham Palace, London, United Kingdom. Charles, Prince of Wales is the heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II. He has been Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay since 1952. He is the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history. He attended Gordonstoun School and Cheam School. He was the first heir to the throne to acquire a university degree. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied anthropology, archaeology, and history. He also spent a term at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he studied Welsh and the history of the principality. While at university, he spent time studying at archaeological sites in France and taking part in excavations in Jersey, in the Channel Islands. He received a master’s from the University of Cambridge in 1975.

Peter Phillips

He was born 15 November 1977 at St Mary’s Hospital, London, United Kingdom. Peter Mark Andrew Phillips is a member of the British royal family. He is the elder child and only son of Anne, Princess Royal, and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips. He is the eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He and his sister, Zara Tindall, do not have official titles because their parents rejected the Queen’s offer of titles when they were born. They are the only grandchildren of the Queen not to have titles. Peter attended the University of Exeter and graduated with a degree in Sports Science. While at Exeter, he played rugby.

Zara Tindall

She was born May 15, 1981, at St Mary’s Hospital, London, United Kingdom. She was born into the family of Anne, Princess Royal, Mark Phillips. Zara Anne Elizabeth Tindall MBE is a member of the British royal family, an equestrian and Olympian. She is the daughter of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips and the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II. She attended the University of Exeter, where she studied physiotherapy. The horsewoman has won an Olympic silver medal and received an MBE for her services to equestrianism in 2007.

Meghan Markle

She was born 4 August 1981 at Canoga Park, Los Angeles, California, United States. Her parents are Doria Ragland and Thomas Markle. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, a retired American actress, became a member of the British royal family upon her marriage to Prince Harry. Markle was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and has a mixed ethnic heritage. She studied Theatre and International Studies at Northwestern University, near Chicago, America. While she gave up acting to undertake royal duties, Markle continues to work with charities and support humanitarian causes.

Prince William  (The Duke of Cambridge)

He was born 21 June 1982 at St Mary’s Hospital, London, United Kingdom. He was born into the family of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Princess of Wales. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, KG, KT, PC, ADC is married to  Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
He graduated with a 2:1 from St Andrews University where he studied Geography in a Scottish Master of Arts degree.

Kate Middleton

She was born 9 January 1982 at Royal Berkshire Hospital into the family of Carole and Michael Middleton. Catherine is married to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. He is expected to become king of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth realms. This makes Catherine a likely future queen consort. She schooled at St Andrew’s School, Pangbourne, Marlborough College and Downe House School. Kate studied History of Art at the University of  St Andrews. Kate graduated with a 2:1 in History of Art.
Prince Harry
He was born on 15 September 1984 at St Mary’s Hospital, London, United Kingdom. His parents are Charles and Diana, Prince and Princess of Wales. Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, KCVO, ADC is the younger son of Prince Charles. He is sixth in the line of succession to the British throne. He is married to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. He joined the Army in 2003 but went on a gap year before that. He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (2005–2006). He has two A-Levels. AB in Art and a D in Geography. During his time at Eton, he was House Captain of Games and represented the school at rugby, cricket, and polo and was a member of the Combined Cadet Force.

Amelia Windsor

She was born 24th August 1995 at The Rosie Hospital, Cambridge, United Kingdom. She was born to the family of George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews and Sylvana Tomaselli whose Grandparents are the Duke and Duchess of Kent. She is the granddaughter of the Queen’s cousin, Prince Edward, and currently 36th in line to the throne. Amelia Windsor, who goes by ‘Mel’, studies modern languages at Edinburgh University. She studies French and Italian.

Freddie Windsor

He was born 6th April 1979 at St Mary’s Hospital, London, United Kingdom. His parents are Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. His grandparents are Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark and one of his Great-grandparent is George V. He is currently 48th in the line of succession to the British throne. He is married to Sophie Winkleman. He studied at Magdalen College at Oxford, where he gained a 2:1 in Classics. He’s now a banker and Vice President at JP Morgan.

Lady Gabriella Windsor

She was born 23 April 1981 at St Mary’s Hospital, London, United Kingdom. She’s the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Her grandparents are Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, and great-grandparents Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia. Lady Gabriella Marina Alexandra Ophelia Windsor is an English freelance writer and member of the extended British royal family. She is 51st in line to the succession of the British throne. She earned an MPhil degree in Social Anthropology from Linacre College, Oxford in 2012.

Lady Sarah Chatto

She was born 1 May 1964 in Kensington Palace, London, United Kingdom. She was born into the family of Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon. She’s their only daughter and is niece to Queen Elizabeth II. She’s also the youngest grandchild of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Chatto is a member of the extended British royal family. She is married to Daniel Chatto. She attended Bedales School, University of the Arts London. As an artist, she attended Camberwell School of Art and then enrolled at Middlesex Polytechnic now University.

Sam Chatto

He was born 28 July 1996, in London, the United Kingdom into the family of Lady Sarah Chatto and Daniel Chatto. His grandparents are Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon. The royal is 22nd in line to the throne. Sam Chatto graduated from the University of Edinburgh last year with a degree in History of Art.

Arthur Chatto

He was born 5 February 1999 in London, the United Kingdom into the family of Lady Sarah and Daniel Chatto. His grandparents are Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon. He studied at Eton College. He is also a student of Edinburgh University studying History of Art.

Charles Armstrong Jones 

He was born July 1, 1999, in London, United Kingdom into the family of David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon and Serena Armstrong-Jones, Countess of Snowdon. Charles Patrick Inigo Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley is the great-grandson of King George VI through his younger daughter, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. He studied at Eton College. He is currently enrolled at Loughborough University in Leicestershire.

Princess Beatrice 

Princess Beatrice of York was born 8 August 1988 at The Portland Hospital, London, United Kingdom. She was born into the family of Sarah and Prince Andrew, Duchess and Duke of York. She is eighth in line to succeed her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II and is the elder daughter of her parents. Beatrice gained a 2:1 degree in History and The History of Ideas from Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Princess Eugenie

She was born 23rd March 1990 at The Portland Hospital, London, the United Kingdom to Sarah and Prince Andrew, Duke and Duchess of York. Princess Eugenie is the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, she is ninth in the line of succession to the British throne. She is married to Jack Brooksbank. She graduated with a 2:1 in 2012 in BA English Literature from Newcastle University.

Prince Edward

Edward Antony Richard Louis was born 10 March 1964 in Buckingham Palace, London, United Kingdom. He is the youngest of four children and third son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At the time of his birth, he was third in the line of succession to the throne; he is now tenth. He is married to Sophie, Countess of Wessex. He attended Whanganui Collegiate School. He studied History at Jesus College, Cambridge. His admission was controversial as his A-level grades were far below the “straight As” usually required to get into Cambridge. His A-Level grades were a C and two Ds. However, he graduated with a 2:2 in 1986.

Prince Richard

He was born 26 August 1944 in Northampton, United Kingdom. He is married to Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester. He is of the House of Windsor. His parents are Prince Henry and Princess Alice, Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. The youngest grandchild of King George V and Queen Mary, he is a paternal cousin of the Queen and currently 26th in line to the British throne. In 1963, he matriculated at Magdalene College in Cambridge where he studied Architecture. He practised as an architect until the death of his elder brother. This placed him in a direct line to inherit his father’s dukedom of Gloucester, which he inherited, as the second duke, in 1974.

 

Alexander Windsor 

He was born on 24 October 1974 at St Mary’s Hospital, London, the United Kingdom to Prince Richard and Birgitte, Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. Major Alexander Patrick Gregers Richard Windsor, Earl of Ulster is a former British Army officer. He is the only son of Prince Richard. His Great-grandparents were: George V, Mary of Teck, John Montagu Douglas Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch and Lady Margaret Bridgeman. He is married to Claire Windsor, Countess of Ulster. He read War Studies at King’s College London, graduating in 1996. He also studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Eton College. 

Lady Davina Lewis

She was born 19 November 1977 in London, the United Kingdom to Prince Richard and Birgitte, Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. She is 30th in the line of succession to the British throne as of June 2018. Her grandparents are Prince Henry and Princess Alice, Duke of Gloucester. She is married to Gary Lewis and is a graduate of the University of the West of England, with a degree in Media Studies.

Flora Ogilvy

She was born 15 December 1994 in Edinburgh, the United Kingdom to James Ogilvy and Julia Ogilvy. Her Great-grandparents are Prince George, Duke of Kent, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, David Ogilvy, 12th Earl of Airlie. Her grandparents are Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy, Angus Ogilvy, Charles Rawlinson. The minor royal graduated with a 2:1 in History of Art from the University of Bristol in 2016.

Alexander Ogilvy

He was born 12 November 1996 in Edinburg, the United Kingdom to James and Julia Ogilvy. He has a sister Flora Alexandra Ogilvy. His Great-grandparents are Prince George, Duke of Kent, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, David Ogilvy, 12th Earl of Airlie. His grandparents are Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy, Angus Ogilvy, Charles Rawlinson. He studies Computer Science and Economics at Brown University in America.

Angus Ogilvy

He was born 14 September 1928 in London, United Kingdom. Before his death on the 26th of December 2004, he was married to Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy in 1963. His father was David Ogilvy, the 12th Earl of Airlie. He is a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1947 he attended Trinity College and the University of Oxford in 1950 where he graduated with a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
James Ogilvy

He was born 29 February 1964 at the Thatched House Lodge, Richmond, United Kingdom. He is the only son of Sir Angus Ogilvy and Princess Alexandra of Kent. He is married to Julia Ogilvy. His grandparents are George V, Mary of Teck. He attended Heatherdown School and Eton College. He also earned a Scottish Master of Arts degree in History of Art at St. Andrews University. James Robert Bruce Ogilvy is the founder and editor of Luxury Briefing.

Cassius Taylor

The son of Lady Helen and Timothy Taylor. His great-grandparents are Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. He was born on the 26th of December 1996 at The Portland Hospital, London, United Kingdom. He is the 44th in line to the throne. He is studying Arts Management at Goldsmiths University. He has an interest in Music and Fine Art and plans to have a career in these fields. He drew his passion from his dad’s Art Gallery at Mayfair where he works part-time.
