The Global Cooling Prize in India is inviting innovators from across the globe to develop affordable and climate-friendly cooling solutions that meet the needs of millions of people around the world.
The solution must meet a variety of climate- and resource-focused criteria, while also operating within cost and scalability constraints. This exciting competition will take place over the course of two years and will allow participants the opportunity to address one of the single largest end-use risks to our climate.
Worth of Award
- The total prize purse of the competition is USD 3 million.
- The top ten finalists selected on the basis of their technical proposal submission will be awarded a prize money of USD 200,000 each for development and shipping of their two prototype models to India.
- The final winner will receive the grand prize of USD 1 million.
Eligibility
- They are seeking submissions from incumbent cooling technology providers, emerging innovators in space cooling and similar technologies, as well as professors, students, and researchers from universities and laboratories around the world. Anyone with a great idea can apply for the prize.
- Global Cooling Prize participants will be required to design their cooling technology to have at least 5X lower climate impact than the climate impact of the baseline unit and no more than 2X the cost of the baseline unit cost at assessed industrial scale.
- In addition to these two primary criteria (i.e. Climate Impact and Affordability), there is a list of supplementary criteria with defined thresholds which requires that all competing technologies also meet these additional requirements to participate.
- The prize supplementary criteria are under review for finalization which will be completed within 60 days of the launch and the indicated prize supplementary criteria are to be considered as directional guidance until full ratification has been secured.
The performance of the technology solution will be evaluated against both the Primary Criteria and Supplementary Criteria, once ratified, as detailed below.
- All the performance metrics will be compared with the baseline unit
- Climate Impact: Energy and Refrigerant
- Must have 5X less climate impact than the baseline unit: Energy and Refrigerant Criteria
- Affordability: Must demonstrate cost potential at full industrialization of no more than twice (2X) the baseline unit cost.
- Power Draw: Power consumption at full load i.e. rated cooling output, should not exceed 700
- Water: Water consumption, if needed, for operation should not exceed 14 litres per day
- Emissions: Zero onsite emissions from any fossil fuel-based captive power source
- Refrigerant: Zero ozone depleting potential (ODP) and lower toxicity (class A) refrigerant complying with IEC 60335-2-40 (2018) or ISO 5149.
- Scalability: Usable in existing homes, rather than requiring a “designed in” engineering solution
- Materials: Use of materials with excessively high embodied carbon or rare earth materials should be optimized
- Operation: Maintain below 27 (+ 0.5) °C DBT and 60 (+ 10) % RH indoor conditions for the duration of the test period
